Chapter 14: The Man Who Left

Blaine found Dad at the cook shelter, peeling potatoes, and for a while he just stood and watched.

Dad peeled slowly and carefully.

Each potato came out of its skin in a single curl.

He laid the curl on a newspaper in a neat spiral and picked up the next.

Blaine had watched him do it at forty Sunday dinners and had never once thought it was a thing worth watching.

He thought so now.

"Did you give him my number?" he said.

Dad's knife paused.

"Who?"

"My father."

"Blaine." Dad put the potato down. "I have never in my life spoken to your father."

"Then how did he find me?"

"The department posted the staff list for the field school. Your name is on it. His isn't hard to find, I'd think, for a man who looked."

Blaine sat down on the bench across the table.

His rash itched under his sleeve, and he did not scratch it.

"I said you used her," he said.

"You did," Dad said.

"I was wrong."

"You weren't entirely wrong," Dad said.

"I was angry because you did the thing I'd have done." Blaine looked at his hands. "If somebody told me she'd asked for it, I'd have taken those sleeping bags out of the truck myself. I'd have taken them out in front of her."
