Chapter 17: Solar Shower

"You invited him," Blaine said.

He stood in the lantern light with his fists at his sides.

His voice was so quiet that Perry stepped closer to him without thinking.

"I did," Dad said.

"I told him no."

"I know you did. And he told you six o'clock Saturday, and it's a public road." Dad folded the clipboard against his chest. "He rang the office and asked for me by name. If I'd said don't come, he'd have come anyway. He'd have stood at the gate with his bottle, and you'd have seen him there on your own."

"So you set a plate."

"I'd rather he sat at a long table, with thirty students and a roast chicken and me beside him. Somewhere you aren't ambushed." Dad's eyes didn't leave Blaine's. "I'd like you to watch him in a chair."

"Why?"

"So you can see how small he is."

Blaine went absolutely silent.

"I managed you again," Dad said. "I know. It's in the job description and I'm not sorry enough to stop. But it's your call. You say cancel, and I ring the diner tonight and tell him the dinner's off."

The crickets sang.

Blaine looked at the dark hills for a long time.

"No," he said. "Let him come."

"You're sure?" Dad asked.
