Chapter 20: Closing Dinner
By six the long tables stood under the string lights, and thirty people were eating roast chicken off paper plates.
Blaine sat on the bench with his back straight and his hands under the table.
His father had spent the whole day in camp.
He had walked the clearing with a coffee and a smile and asked the students where they were from.
He had told two of them a joke about a rock and charmed a third.
Each time he had found some excuse to say the words my son, and each time Blaine had felt them land.
Now his father sat at Dad's right hand, at the head of the table, in the quilted jacket.
He had brought a bottle of wine, and opened it, and poured for himself.
Dad sat beside him, calm, carving.
Perry sat on Blaine's left, close enough that their thighs pressed together from hip to knee.
He had said nothing at all since they sat down.
