Chapter 24: The Porch
"Not yet," Perry said.
They stood side by side on the dewy lawn, looking up at the porch light, and Blaine did not argue.
"Come up first," Perry said. "I want to do it right."
They went up the front steps together, in bare feet, and onto the porch.
It was deep and screened, with a wooden swing at one end and a lilac hedge pressed against the mesh.
The bulb over the door threw a yellow circle on the boards.
Perry had stood in this circle two years ago, drunk and shaking, with a hand on a chest.
He stopped at the same spot.
Blaine stopped in front of him.
The night was quiet except for crickets, and the street was dark, every window shut.
"This is where you said it," Perry said.
"I know."
"I want to hear it differently."
Blaine's mouth twitched.
"I'm not drunk," Perry said. "My father's upstairs and your mother's chair is in the dining room, and I'm sober as a judge. Say it however you want."
Blaine took a breath.
He raised one big hand, slowly, and laid it flat on Perry's chest, over the heart.
He held it there.
Perry's pulse hammered under his palm, and neither of them pretended it didn't.
