Chapter 21: The Carpet

Ji Hanzhou had stood guard in a flooded tunnel, and in a snowstorm at a border post.

Neither had made his hands as cold as a cinema doorway in the city.

The broadcaster's premiere hall had a glass front, and a pavement where a red carpet should have been.

Fang had had the carpet taken up.

What stood there instead was a barrier with two guards and a woman with a clipboard, who looked at his dress uniform and went pale.

"Invitations only, Captain," she said.

"I am the army's liaison on the series."

"The producer's list does not include..."

"Then it is wrong," said Hanzhou, and left it there.

Behind him the minibus had stopped at the kerb.

The cast climbed down, eleven of them in dark clothes, and stood on the pavement in a line.

They did not go in.

The gruff actor in his fifties crossed his arms. The boy with the shaved head took out his phone and began to film.

"We'll walk when the credits are right," the sergeant actor told the woman with the clipboard, very politely. "Until then we're enjoying the evening."

Photographers had begun to gather at the barrier.

Wanning stepped out of the second car.

She wore the only good dress she owned, the dark one from the magazine picture, and her hair was tied low.

Hanzhou looked at her and forgot what he had been about to do with his hands.

She came straight to him.

"I need you to stand somewhere," she said.
