Chapter 13: The Ledger

Si-woo woke on the burnt floor with Ji-seok's black coat over him.

Morning light came through the cracked white windows in long, dusty bars.

It lay across his bare back, and for the first time in five months he did not mind.

He lay still and felt for the lines.

The long one at his hip was a faint warm thread.

The rest was only skin.

Ji-seok was sitting against the wall with his knees up, watching him.

Si-woo did not know how long he had been there.

Ji-seok's veins ran steady gold under his skin, and the light in the room had not flickered once.

"You're awake," Ji-seok said.

"You didn't sleep."

"I was afraid it would stop."

"What would?"

"This." Ji-seok lifted a hand and turned it over. "I keep thinking I'll wake up and it will be back in the cage."

Si-woo sat up.

His shirt was gone and the floor was ash.

The sun was on him, and he felt shy for the first time since Ji-seok had kissed his spine.

"Come here," he said.

Ji-seok crawled across the floor to him, huge and careful.

"Test it," Si-woo said.

"Test what?"

"Whether it holds when you want something. It never has before."

Ji-seok's ears went red.

"Bedroom," Si-woo said. "Now."

The bedroom's new glass was clean, and sun poured across the sheets.
