Chapter 20: Crane's Own Pain
Hadrian Crane laughed.
It was a dry little sound, and it was the first time I had heard him make it.
"A pebble and a smear of wax," he said. "Gentlemen, this is what we have been called here to see."
"Marshal," the grey-bearded general began.
"No. I will not have it said that the council of Harrowmark was frightened by an old woman's cupboard."
He stood.
He swept the paper off the table with his own hand and held it up to the room.
"A forgery. My seal, my thumb, copied by a hedge witch to blackmail her betters."
"I will tear it in front of the garrison, and then I will hang her."
"Marshal, don't," said the lean captain.
"Open the doors!"
The guards at the far end swung the great doors wide.
Beyond them ran a stone gallery above the keep's parade ground.
Below it stood the whole garrison of the capital in ranks, two thousand men in grey, come in from drill to hear the verdict.
Crane walked out onto the gallery with the paper in his raised fist.
The witch followed him as far as the threshold.
