Chapter 29: Seven Fishes

I uncapped my pen.

The store had gone quiet behind him.

The manager, the girls in black bows and my whole front row were all watching him.

The man in the reading glasses who'd waited three hours in the cold.

My hand was shaking.

I wrote it anyway.

"For nightshift, who left the first comment. You taught me about Sunday tables. Happy birthday to me. Love, Bee."

He read it standing at the table.

Then he closed the book and held it against his coat with both hands, the way Raimondo had once held an envelope.

Except he meant it.

"Thank you," he said. "I'll read it four times."

"Only four?"

"I'll negotiate."

Behind him, Nonna started clapping.

Then the whole front row.

Then the whole store.

The wives had been sitting at the club since October.

I hadn't.

I'd told him I'd take my chair when I had chosen to be a wife, not been sold one.

Then I'd chosen, in a count room, and then my book had eaten the next six weeks.

So my first time was Christmas Eve.

It wasn't at the club.
