Chapter 15: Fifteen More

I didn't answer.

I couldn't.

"Don't ask me that," I said.

"I just did."

"Then don't make me answer it. Please."

Far below us, Rhett came up out of the black water, coughing, and started to swim for the rocks.

Cade didn't even glance down.

"The Fiftieth Vow," he said slowly. "My father told me that story when I was a kid. A claimant lives thirty days as the lowest wolf in the last free pack. Wolf leashed in moonstone."

The ring was still glowing on my thumb.

"You walked in on the same day as her letter. You don't shift. Not in the lake, not in the ice house, not with Hagan coming at you on a cliff. You fight like you've had to win against things three times your size."

"Cade."

"You read my letter. You sat in my chair and read it."

"Yes."

"I wrote that letter to you."

I made myself hold his eyes.

"If I say who I am out loud," I said, "the vow breaks. If I shift, it breaks. If I use my aura, it breaks. Every pack I took goes back to war with every other pack. That's the deal. That's the whole deal."

"So you can't say it."

"I can't say it."

"But I can."

"Anybody can. Saying it doesn't break it. Me answering yes does."

He stood there bare in the cold and worked it out.

Then his face changed, and I saw the hurt arrive.

"You let me kiss you."

"I kissed you back."

"You let me write that I'd kneel to you, and then you let me hand you a protein bar."

"I didn't let you. I stole it."

"Don't." His voice cracked. "Don't be funny right now. Every morning at that lake, you knew. I told you about my father. I told you about the boy with the girl's hair in his fist. And you knew I was writing to you."
