Chapter 21: The Witness
Up on the rim, nobody had heard him.
Only Cade and I had heard.
Cade looked at me across Rhett's dripping head.
I gave him the smallest shake of my head.
Not here.
"Infirmary," Cade said, loud enough for the rim. "He's half drowned. Somebody bring a blanket."
Nobody on the varsity side moved.
Lark came down the quarrymen's stair with her own hoodie in her arms.
At noon Rhett was sitting up in an infirmary bed in a paper gown, with a bandage on his neck where Cade's teeth had held him.
He looked very young.
Lark stood guard at the door with a mop.
Cade leaned on the wall with his own forearm stitched.
I sat on the chair by the bed with the black notebook on my knee.
"Say it again," I said. "Slowly. All of it."
Rhett stared at the ceiling.
"October fourteenth. Last year. The Run." He swallowed. "Peyton said we should wait at the quarry, because the omegas always panic and go the short way. I didn't shift. She didn't either. She wanted to film it."
