Chapter 4: The Hearing

The redheaded resident from the teaching room caught Eli at the hospital's front desk at nine-fifty on Monday morning.

"You're Winslow," he said. "Tom Dunn. I waved at you in a paper gown, so we're basically close."

"Eli."

"Eli. Do you know what's happening on the fifth floor in ten minutes?"

"No."

"Kessling got Dr. Kelleher called in front of the chair about Thursday. A conduct review." Tom lowered his voice. "I'm not supposed to know. The scheduling assistant told me because she hates Kessling and likes me."

Eli's stomach dropped.

"Gabe didn't tell me."

"Gabe wouldn't. He's the type who'd hold a door while the building fell on him." Tom looked at him. "You're thinking about going up there."

"Yes."

"Good. I'm not stopping you. I'm also not going with you."

"Fair."

"Take the elevator on the left. The one on the right stops at the cafeteria every time."

The fifth-floor conference room had glass walls and a long table.

Eli saw them through the glass before he opened the door.

The chair of medicine sat at the head, a gray-haired woman in a green cardigan with a pen she did not seem to need.

Kessling sat on her right with a folder squared on the table.

Gabe sat at the far end alone, in his white coat, with his reading glasses folded in his hand.

Eli opened the door and walked in.

Four heads turned, one of them a man in a suit from the hospital's legal office.

"I'm sorry," the chair said. "This is a closed meeting."

"I'm Eli Winslow," Eli said. "I was the volunteer."
