Chapter 9: Lunch With Kessling

The Italian place across from the hospital was loud at noon.

Nurses sat at the long table by the window.

Two residents shared a pizza at the bar, and a technician in scrubs read a paperback in a corner booth.

Kessling had taken a table in the middle of the room, with a white cloth and a bottle of sparkling water.

He stood when Eli came in, and pulled out a chair.

"Mr. Winslow. I'm so glad you came."

"You said alone."

"And here you are."

Eli sat, and put his hands on his knees under the table so they would not shake.

"Order whatever you like," Kessling said. "I'm told the gnocchi is excellent."

"I'm not hungry."

"Then let's talk."

Kessling folded his napkin into a neat square.

"I want to be honest with you. I like Gabriel. I've worked beside him for eleven years, and I believe he's a very good doctor."

"But?"

"But he has an unfortunate weakness, which is sentiment."

Kessling turned his water glass a quarter turn.

"He's known you since you were a baby. He's a bachelor of forty-two with no family but your father. Then a bright young man in a paper gown walks into his teaching room and says yes to everything."

Eli kept his face blank.

"Nobody says yes to everything."

"I think you did."

Kessling reached into his jacket and set an envelope on the cloth.

It was thick, and it was not sealed.

"There's a statement inside, one page. It says you were put in a difficult position. It says Dr. Kelleher initiated contact and you didn't feel able to refuse, because of the family connection."
