Chapter 6: The Winter Order

I did not wait for morning.

At first light I walked into the Alpha's office without knocking and put the gray folder on his desk.

Dashiell was already awake, standing at the window with a cup of black coffee.

He looked at the folder, and then at me.

"Open it," I said. "Page one, line nine."

He set down the cup and turned the page.

I watched him read.

I watched him find the name, and the winter, and his own signature at the bottom.

The color left his face.

"Vane," he said.

"Maren Vane. She was my mother."

He did not speak.

"Six years ago she came to Ironwood land with a fever and no wolf, looking for a healer." I kept my voice level, and it cost me. "The warden said she was on your list. She was turned away at the gate in the snow."

"Elowen."

"She died on the road to the valley. I was eighteen. I carried her the last mile."

My voice broke on the last word, and I let it.

"I took a job in your kitchen three years later because I needed work, and for three years I poured your coffee."

"I didn't know," he said.

"You signed it."

"Honora brought me forty names the week my father died." He had not moved. "She said they were drifters taking food from my pack. I was twenty-six, and I signed what the Council put in front of me."
