Page's POV

Kent's black Audi was in the driveway when I got home from the bakery at ten past noon on Saturday.

He stood on the porch in a navy quarter-zip and loafers, in six inches of snow, with a bouquet of white roses wrapped in cellophane.

He looked pleased with himself and sure of his welcome.

I parked and sat with my hands on the wheel.

Reeve's truck was in the yard.

The front door was shut, and I knew he was behind it.

I had told him that morning to stay inside and let me do this myself.

I got out.

"Page," Kent said, and smiled the smile I had once mistaken for kindness.

"You look tired. You've lost weight. Have you been eating?"

"I'm fine," I said.

"You're not fine. You're angry. You always get this way when you haven't eaten."

I climbed the steps.

I stopped at the top, two feet from him, under the little black camera with its blue light.

It blinked once.

I looked at the lens.

"Mom," I said clearly, "this is Kent. He's leaving."
