Chapter 15: I'm Asking

Joelle stood on the townhouse step at ten that night with her mother's casserole dish in her hands and no plan.

The hearing was Friday, and Barrett's sworn statement sat in her bag with the petition.

She had told Maureen she was going home to sleep.

She had not told Maureen which home.

Dustin opened the door before she knocked.

He was in his shirtsleeves, with the sonogram picture in his hand, and he looked at her.

"You said terms," he said. "You said I ask."

"I know what I said."

She put the dish on the hall table.

"I'm asking," Joelle said. "I want you. Tonight. Not because of Friday and not because I'm scared."

His throat moved.

"Say it again."

"I want you to fuck me, Dustin."

He kissed her so hard the door slammed shut behind her.

He lifted her off the floor, and she wrapped her legs around his waist and let him carry her down the hall into the kitchen.

He set her on the marble island, where the light was dim and the stone was cold through her skirt.

"Here?" he said against her neck.

"Here. You never once touched me in this room."

"I wanted to every day."

"Then do it."

She pulled his shirt open and buttons skittered across the floor.

He shoved her skirt up around her hips and dragged her panties down her legs, and she kicked them off.

For a moment he only looked.

"Look at you," he said hoarsely.

"Don't look. Touch."

He dropped to his knees on the tile and put his mouth on her.

She grabbed the edge of the counter with both hands.
