Chapter 20: The Suitcase

"Where are you?" I said.

"The garage." Joanne was breathing fast. "He's in the den. He found out my car was parked on Butler Street. Your cousin told him."

"Did he hurt you?"

"No. He threw my purse across the kitchen." Her voice wobbled. "He said, you go there again, Jo, you don't come back."

I knew that line.

I'd heard it on the porch with a duffel on my shoulder.

Magnus had stopped drying the plate in his hands.

"Then don't go back," I said.

There was a long silence.

I could hear her breathing.

I could hear a TV somewhere behind her, loud, a game.

"Aunt Joanne. Get in your car and come here. I'll leave the light on."

"I'm already packed," she whispered. "I packed it Sunday. It's been in the trunk for two days."

Then she hung up.

Magnus put the plate down.

"I'll go," he said. "I'll wait at the end of their street."

"No. You'll stay right here." I took off my apron. "If he follows her, I want somebody six foot four in this kitchen."
