Chapter 32: Bird
It was a plain white card with a blue bird on the front.
Inside, in his square hand:
"Happy 21st, Darby.
The diner's yours now. Nobody's touched it.
The year you were born, your dad broke his own rule and wrote me two lines instead of one.
'It's a girl. We call her Bird.'
Come home and eat.
M.T."
I read it standing behind the register with the coffee going cold.
Nobody had called me Bird since I was eight.
I'd forgotten I'd ever been anybody's Bird.
"He wrote you that?" I said.
"He wrote me that."
"You kept it for twenty-one years."
"I kept every line he ever sent me," Magnus said. "It's a short stack of paper."
I put the card in the last empty space in the frame.
Open, so the words showed.
Fourteen.
We were married on the last Saturday in September, a year after the washroom, almost to the day.
Gretchen said it was the most disgusting thing she'd ever heard and insisted on the date anyway.
The Bluebird closed at two, like always.
The sign on the door said CLOSED FOR A WEDDING. EAT SOMETHING ANYWAY.
