Chapter 10: The Altar
On the first of November the family altar went up on the long table, under the dining room window.
Doña Cirila directed it from a chair, with her cane.
There were marigolds in coffee cans and sugar skulls with names on the foreheads.
There was a plate of pan de muerto and a bottle of anisette and a hundred candles in glass.
At the top, in silver frames, stood the dead.
Amador's mother Fela hung at one end.
Cruz's mother Elena, a young woman laughing on a horse, stood at the other.
Between them, new, was my father in his work shirt, squinting into a Las Cruces sun.
My mother had brought his photo from the bottom of her suitcase and set it there herself.
Nobody had asked her to.
Nobody had objected.
Amador had put one hand over his mouth when he saw it and said, "Gracias, Rocio."
"He should be with the family," my mother said.
I had to leave the room for a minute.
When I came back, Cruz was kneeling by the altar with a box of long matches.
