Chapter 19: The Boys at the Door

The cold came in over the floor, and with it came a smell.

I was off the bunk before I knew I was moving, naked, with my hair in my face.

Cruz was already at the door, on his feet, with the cord marks on his wrists and the blanket forgotten.

"Wolves," he said, very low.

"How many?"

"Seven. Eight."

He breathed in through his nose and went still.

"The boys," he said. "The young ones. The ones from the portal."

The door stood open on a yard of blue snow.

Beyond it, between the pines, a shape moved.

Then another, and another, until I could count them against the white.

They made a ring of gray and tawny bodies in the trees at the edge of the clearing.

They did not come closer.

They circled.

"Cirila said by dark," I said. "We left the valley."

"The canyon is the old winter range," he said. "The boys think it is still ours."

His voice shook.

"They've come to see if the law needs them," he said.

"The corrida."

"Or to see what we do."

I looked at the ring and saw the one in the middle, big and black with a white blaze.

I knew that shape.

He had stood at the front of the young wolves in the yard with his arms folded.

"Cruz," I said. "If we run, they run us."

"Yes."

"Then we don't run."

He turned his head and looked at me, and the gold flooded all the way up through his eyes.

"Together," he said.

I did not answer.

I let go.

It came up through my bones in a long, hot rush.

Fur slid out over my skin, my spine bent, and the floor dropped away from my face.

I stood on four paws in the doorway with my claws on the cold wood.

Beside me, an ash-gray wolf with a dark saddle across his shoulders stepped into the frame and lowered his head.

His shoulder pressed against mine.

I could feel him shaking.

The blood on his throat was fresh, and I could smell it, and so could they.

The black wolf in the middle of the clearing stopped.
