Chapter 6: The Diner

Linnea's POV

By noon I was in the Lakeside Diner with a plate of eggs, a borrowed phone, and a booth by the front window.

June had gone home to sleep after her night shift, and I'd sworn I'd only eat and come straight back.

The waitress knew me from the summers I'd spent at my grandmother's.

"You look thin, hon," she said, and poured me orange juice I had not ordered.

I was drinking it when the black car pulled up outside.

It was the same black as every car at Tempest House.

Cressida got out of the back in a cream coat and sunglasses.

Two women in grey nurse's uniforms followed her.

I put my fork down.

She came through the door and the bell rang over her head, and every person in the diner looked up.

The farmers in the corner booth.

Two women with strollers.

The old man who sells bait.

Cressida took off her sunglasses and smiled at the whole room.

"Linnea, darling. There you are. We've been so worried."

I held up the phone.

I pressed record and set it face-up on the table, and I didn't hide it.

"I'm fine," I said. "How did you find me?"

"We're family. We always find family." She turned to the room. "I'm sorry to disturb everyone. My niece-in-law has had a breakdown. She walked out of our home yesterday without her medication, and we've driven all morning to bring her somewhere safe."

The waitress's hand tightened on the coffeepot.
