Chapter 11: The Mirror
That afternoon, my mother went to Creel to choose the wedding flowers.
She said goodbye with a kiss on the cheek and told both of us to look after the house.
Ciro kept watching the road until her truck disappeared behind the pines.
Then he took my hand.
"Come here."
His room was on the top floor, at the end of a spiral staircase.
It was a huge room with dark beams, an iron bed, and a window overlooking the valley.
One entire wall was covered by an antique mirror with a bronze frame.
The afternoon sun poured in, bathing the sheets in gold.
I’d never been in there before.
"This is the first room of yours I’ve seen," I said.
"It’s the only place where I don’t hide."
He sat in a leather chair, three meters from the mirror, and held out a hand to me.
"Take your clothes off."
"Here?"
"Here. In the light."
I did it slowly.
First my sweater, then my blouse, then my pants.
I stood before him in my underwear, the afternoon light falling across my skin.
