Chapter 8: What Is He Playing At
The card sat on Leigh's dresser all night.
She read the back of it four times before she slept.
Not the coast road.
The kidnappers had driven her down the coast road to the Gull Street dock, in the first life.
She had never told anyone that, and in this life nobody could possibly know it.
In the morning she took the card downstairs and put it in her coat pocket, next to the divorce petition.
The lawyer had already filed it, and Blaine's copy was due to go to his office by courier that afternoon.
Leigh wanted to hand it to him herself.
She stood on the steps of the Pemberton Group building at nine o'clock, in a navy suit, with Conroy waiting in the car at the curb.
Blaine came out of the revolving door a minute later, and he had clearly been told she was there.
He had flowers in one hand.
They were white lilies, the flower she had been allergic to since she was twelve.
"Leigh," he said, smiling. "I knew you'd come to your senses."
"I came to give you this."
She held out the envelope.
He did not take it.
"Last night was a show," he said. "I understand. You wanted your family to see you were wanted. Now you've seen it, and you've made your point. Talia is humiliated and I'm furious. Come home."
"You brought lilies," Leigh said.
"You love lilies."
"I sneeze when I walk past them. I've sneezed in front of you for eight years."
He frowned, genuinely confused.
"I'm filing for divorce, Blaine. This is your copy."
