Chapter 14: The Ledger
We found the second ledger in the copper still at four in the morning.
Ollie had a hunch about the one place the bookkeeper had always stood guard.
He pried off a rivet plate with a screwdriver, and a black book fell out into his hands.
It was the real one.
The numbers in the book on the desk were clean, and the numbers in this one were not.
Page after page showed money leaving the Kane accounts in small amounts, every week, to a shell company with a Lakewood address.
"He's been skimming for two years," Ollie said, reading over my shoulder. "And selling the rest."
"Not skimming," I said. "Paying."
"Paying who?"
"Look at the dates. Every big payment comes right after Crowe's men hit us."
Ollie turned the page.
On the last line, in a careful bookkeeper's hand, was a payment dated five weeks ago.
It was three days before Jude was shot.
It said only: "Docks, early shift. Confirmed."
