Chapter 23: Day Ninety

On the morning of day ninety, I woke before him.

It was the first time in three months that I had.

He lay on his back with one arm over his head and the sheet at his waist.

The long pink scar down his chest rose and fell, slow and even.

I put two fingers on his wrist, out of habit.

Fifty-eight.

I let my hand stay.

By nine, I had dressed, and had the four pages in front of me on the long table.

Ollie stood across from me, wringing his hands.

"Doc, I can type up a new one. Whatever you want. Any terms."

"I don't want terms."

I turned to page three.

Everything paid stays paid, and no one will stop her.

Nothing in this agreement requires, expects or pays for sex.

Below it, in blue ink, was my own margin note.

Mr. Kane follows the nurse's orders about his wound, without argument.

I took the pen and wrote one line under it.

This contract is over, because I'm staying anyway.

Then I took the four pages in both hands and tore them down the middle.

The sound was loud in the old brick room.

Ollie put his hand over his mouth.
