Chapter 16: Resignation

Quentin's POV

I wrote the letter at the dining table at eleven that night.

It took four lines.

I, Quentin Stroud, resign as chief executive officer of Hartigan Hotels, effective immediately.

I signed it, and the pen didn't shake, and I hated that.

Livia sat on the sofa across the room in my shirt, with her knees up and a legal pad on them.

She had been writing for two hours.

Robin had sent her a spreadsheet at nine, a list of every visitor logged on the thirty-first floor since August, and Livia had gone down it with a highlighter.

"A man from Stanhope Capital," she said without looking up. "Three visits. Each time he signed in for Merrick, and each time he stayed forty minutes."

"Stanhope is the buyer."

"Stanhope is the buyer. And he's on the log in Robin's handwriting as 'Merrick's guest, lobby escort.'"

"It's evidence of a lunch."

"It's a start." She finally looked up, and her eyes went to the paper in my hand. "What's that?"

"Tomorrow, the board votes. Merrick has six of nine. I can't beat that with a spreadsheet."

"So?"

"So they won't need to throw me out." I crossed the room and held the letter out. "I'll hand it over before the vote. They can sell if they want, but you won't carry my name into that room. You're twenty-six. You have a life after this."

"Quentin."

"Take it. Please. I'd rather lose the company than watch him put your photograph on a screen."
