Chapter 23: Not in the Building, Sir
On Monday morning, I walked onto the thirty-first floor at eight-thirty, with my hair down and my glasses in my bag.
I had been in the building for six weeks, and I had never once walked in without checking the room.
Today I didn't check, and the lobby went quiet.
Robin was standing at reception with a coffee in each hand.
She held one out to me.
"I've been told to call you Ms. Hartigan," she said. "I said I'd rather die."
"Robin is fine."
"Robin it is." She leaned in. "Forty dollars says you've got a speech."
"Fifty says I don't."
"Then why are you shaking?"
I took the coffee and didn't answer.
The whole floor had gathered again.
Sixty people stood around the front desk, and the gray-haired chair of the board stood at the edge, with her hands folded.
Quentin waited beside the elevators in his navy suit, with a flat expression I knew too well.
I walked past him and stepped up onto the low platform where the reception desk ended.
"Good morning," I said.
Nobody answered.
"Many of you know me as Livia Doyle. Doyle was my mother's name, and I have used it since I was seven. My name is Livia Hartigan, and the man who built this company was my grandfather."
A murmur went around, and then it stopped.
"I came here six weeks ago without telling anyone. I wanted to find out who made my grandfather leave his own building. I found out, and so did you, on Thursday." I took a breath. "He is gone. He won't be back."
