Chapter 11: The Envelopes

The first truck came up the lane at five-fifty on Friday morning.

I was at the kitchen sink with a mug in my hand.

Dean was out in the yard, already working.

I watched through the window as the truck stopped.

An old man in a John Deere cap got out with an envelope.

Then a second truck pulled in behind him.

Then a minivan, and a flatbed, and two pickups with their headlights still on.

By six there were nineteen vehicles in my mother's yard.

I went out on the porch in my socks.

The old man held out the envelope.

"It's four thousand dollars," he said. "It's what I have."

"You can pay it back when the beans come in, or never."

"I can't take this."

"You stood up in the Grange for every one of us." He pushed it at me.

"Orrin raised my rate the week my wife was buried. Take it."

Behind him, a woman got out of the minivan with a casserole dish and a check.

Then another man.

Then Birdie, in her overalls, with a coffee can full of cash.

She was grinning from ear to ear.

"I told you," she said. "I'm naming a calf after you."

I stood on the porch while the whole county lined up in my yard.

I got a check from the woman who ran the church kitchen.

I got an envelope from the man who had sold my father his first combine.

A boy of fifteen gave me a roll of fives and tens, with his ball cap in his fist.

I tried to say thank you to each of them, and I couldn't get past the first word.

The envelopes came to forty-one thousand three hundred dollars.

My own account held twenty-two thousand seven hundred more.

I was still a hundred and eighteen thousand short.

Dean came up the porch steps with his hat in his hand.
