Chapter 23: Ruggero's Seat
The gate bell rang at four in the afternoon, the day before the wedding.
I was in the front hall with a tape measure around my neck and a box of place cards.
Through the glass I saw a man standing outside the iron bars in a gray overcoat that hung loose on him.
He had lost twenty pounds.
His beard had grown out, and there was white in it now.
Ruggero Orsini did not ring again.
He only stood there with his hands folded in front of him.
I called for Sandro.
He came down the stairs, saw the gate, and stopped on the fourth step.
"He has one day," I said. "I'd guess the elders gave it to him."
"His mother asked them."
"Then open the gate, Sandro."
He walked out into the cold bareheaded and opened it himself.
The two men looked at each other for a long moment, as they had on the night of the box.
Neither of them smiled.
"Sandro," Ruggero said.
"Ruggero."
"I am permitted until midnight. I asked my mother where I should spend it, and she said the cemetery."
He swallowed.
