Chapter 16: Breakfast
"Darling," Eleanor said. "You're wet to the knees."
She looked at our joined hands.
Then at me.
Her face didn't change, but she set down her spoon.
Blair had a coffee cup halfway to her mouth.
She put it back in the saucer very slowly.
"Lawrence," she said. "People are eating."
"Good," he said.
He let go of my hand.
He took the envelope out of his shirt pocket and unfolded the check.
He didn't sit down.
He didn't lower his voice.
"Six years ago," he said, "my mother wrote this in my father's sunroom on the morning of my wedding."
The dining room went quiet in pieces.
First the tables near us. Then the ones by the fireplace.
A man in a golf shirt turned in his chair.
Two women from the church flower committee were at the corner table.
They'd come for the blueberry pancakes every Monday since I'd started.
They both put down their forks.
Lawrence read out the amount and the name signed under it.
"Lawrence, sit down," Eleanor said.
He held it up so the nearest tables could see the memo line.
