Lawrence read it twice.
Then he put the phone face down on the dock post.
"Don't read the comments," he said.
I'd already read the comments.
Up on the lawn, Poppy was showing the front desk girl how to make a rabbit with rope.
She didn't know there was anything to read.
I meant to keep it that way.
By Tuesday the video had been shared eleven thousand times.
The cancellations came in all week.
A couple from Connecticut. A family reunion of twenty. A bridal shower that had booked the whole porch for August.
On Thursday a woman checking out of room six looked at me through the dining room door.
She said to her husband, loud enough, "That's her. The baby trap."
He hushed her.
She didn't lower her voice.
Fourteen rooms.
Six empty for August.
Then eight.
I kept Poppy out of the kitchen now.
She went to the day camp at the church in the mornings and stayed with Hattie at the bakery after.
She hated it.
"I want to help," she said every morning. "Daddy says I'm the best knot tier on the whole staff."
