Chapter 22: What She Never Said

The midwife left at eight with a plate of my scones and a long look at the two of us.

June went down at nine, fed and heavy, in the cradle beside our bed.

I say our bed.

I hadn't said it before, even in my head.

Declan sat on the edge of the mattress in his shirtsleeves and waited, with his hands loose between his knees.

I stood by the window with the baby monitor in my fist.

"Tell me," he said.

"I thought nobody would ever pick me."

He didn't move.

"It's the first thing I ever learned," I said. "Dad picked Bianca, every time."

"Camille."

"Every cake, every birthday. I was the one who didn't ask, because asking made it worse."

"Camille."

"Then Gavin picked me, and I thought, finally."

My voice shook, and I let it.

"But he picked me to use, and I took it as proof. If the one person who chose me did it for a reason, then that's all being chosen is."

"I didn't pick you for a reason."

"I know that now."

"Do you?"

"I'm saying it so you know I know."

I put the monitor down.

"I thought you were being kind. I thought it was guilt, and I'd be the thing you fixed. I kept waiting for the day you looked at me and the want was gone."

"It isn't gone."

"I know."

"It's been months since I touched you, and I think of nothing else."

My whole body answered that.

"The doctor cleared me on Tuesday," I said.

His head came up.

"I know," he said. "I drove you."

"I wanted you to know that I counted."

He stood.

He crossed the room slowly and stopped a breath away, and I took the front of his shirt in both hands.

"Pick me," I said. "Not because you have to. Because you want to."

"I picked you at a church two years ago," he said roughly. "I've been picking you every day since."
