Chapter 22: The Chair
Eight hundred faces turned to table one.
Seo-yeon felt Do-hyun go still beside her.
She stood up.
Her chair scraped on the parquet, loud in the silence.
"Yes," she said. Her voice carried without a microphone. "I told her to read it. That's the whole of my doing, Madam."
"I told a girl to read what she was signing."
Madam Heo's mouth thinned.
"You came into this family to destroy it."
"I walked out of this family," Seo-yeon said. "In your lobby. You followed me."
She took a breath to say the rest.
A small hand closed on her wrist.
The Teacher had turned in her chair. She looked up at Seo-yeon with her son's dark, steady eyes.
"Sit down, child," she said quietly. "This one's mine."
She let go.
She stood up from the last chair at the family table, one hand on the edge of it.
She didn't ask for the microphone. She didn't need it. She had taught children for forty years.
"Madam calls me a family friend," she said.
Her voice was small and perfectly clear, and it reached the back of the room.
"I'm not a friend of this family. I never was."
