Chapter 20: The Second Letter
The gates at Lake Forest were open when we got there.
The housekeeper stood beside them with her hands folded, and she had been crying.
"She's in the library, sir," she said to Stefan. "She's been in there since the board."
"Thank you," Stefan said, and touched her arm, which I had never seen him do to staff.
Winifred sat in a wing chair in the library, with a cold cup of tea at her elbow and a book she was not reading.
She did not stand.
"If you've come for an apology," she said, "I'll save you the drive."
"We've come for the safe," Stefan said.
For the first time in my life, I saw Winifred Hartwell move without grace.
She half rose, caught the arm of the chair, and sat back down hard.
"Who told you?"
"A man who is eating lunch alone today," Stefan said. "Where is it?"
"You will not touch your father's things."
"They are my things, in my house."
She said nothing.
He walked to the far wall, where the portrait of his father hung, and swung it away from the paneling on its hinge.
