Chapter 23: Frost

"Yes," my godmother said. "I did."

The neighbors looked at each other.

The widow lowered her poker very slowly.

"You stood up in that chapel," Cassian said. His voice was low and rough. "In front of my father. In front of everyone."

"I did. You told my goddaughter you loved her. Twice. The second time with my hand on the book."

"I know what I did."

"Do you?" She tilted her head, exactly the way he did when he listened. "Eight years of every lie in the valley ringing in your ears. Did it teach you anything?"

He was quiet.

The sun was nearly over the wall. The frost at the edge of the shadow was going dark and wet.

"That I'd rather hear no," he said. "Than a yes that isn't true."

She listened.

"Yes," she said. "That's true. Good."

I looked from one of them to the other.

"Did you know?" I said to her. "On masquerade night. Did you know I'd end up at his gate?"

"No, child. I gave you one night. You walked down that path to his carriage on your own two feet."

"I've watched a great many people. I've never once been able to guess what an orchard keeper's daughter will do."

Dulcie made a noise that might have been a laugh or a sob.
