Chapter 18: The Father
We slept on a dust sheet in the empty front hall, under his coat and mine.
Nobody came for us until ten the next morning.
The bell was a real bell, brass and old, the kind in movies.
Jude was up before I was.
He stood at the front window with the telescope case at his feet.
A long black car was rolling up the drive between the bare trees.
"That's him," he said.
I sat up and pulled my blazer around me.
"I thought he said not to call."
"He said not to call him. He didn't say he wouldn't come."
The man who got out was tall and silver-templed.
His eyes were the same grey as his son's, with none of the same heat.
He wore a charcoal overcoat and carried a leather folder.
He walked up the steps.
Jude opened the door.
"Jude," his father said.
"Father."
"Is this the girl?"
I stood.
I had a ripped hem, no tights, and a bruise on my hip.
I was not going to hide any of it.
"My name is Roberta Whittredge," I said.
"I know your name." His eyes went over me, once. "I've had a conversation with the chair of your school's board."
