Chapter 15: Her Price
Dex gave her the couch in the living room and a blanket that smelled like the dryer.
"Don't touch the toaster," he told her. "It's the only thing I own."
She laughed, the first real laugh I had heard from her in weeks, and then she covered her mouth.
By midnight the suite was dark, and Dex's snoring came through his door in long, rolling waves.
I lay in the big bed in the next room and listened to her not sleeping.
She had turned off her phone and left it on the coffee table, where I could see it from the doorway.
At two I got up and found her sitting in the dark with her knees pulled up.
"I'm not going to bother you," she said.
"You're bothering me by breathing."
"Then I'll stop."
"Rox."
She looked up.
"You gave me an affidavit and a signature," I said. "I read it twice. You put yourself in front of a prosecutor for me."
"It was my father's fault."
"It was your silence too, and you wrote that down."
"I know what I did."
"So now I'm going to ask you something, and you're going to answer it plainly."
She waited, and the streetlight lay across her face.
"For three years you gave me what was safe," I said. "You said what he wanted, you went where he sent you, and you said go. I'm done with safe. What do you want?"
