Chapter 17: Second Set
Gerald lunged for the ledgers.
I stepped in front of him, and for a second we stood chest to chest in the porch light.
"Sit down, Gerald," I said.
He looked at me, and then at fourteen guests staring up from the table, and he sat.
It was the first order he had ever taken from me, and the whole porch watched him do it.
Roxy carried the ledgers to the head of the table and set them down between the candles.
She slid off the rubber band, and the old leather cracked when she opened the first one.
"This is my father's handwriting," she said. "Everyone here has seen it on a Christmas card."
Nobody answered.
She turned a page and read in a voice that did not shake.
"March the third. Two million one hundred thousand dollars. Monroeville lot."
She looked up.
"And in the margin he wrote, J does not look at statements. I signed for her."
The banker's wife made a small sound.
"That's one," Roxy said. "I'll read the rest."
She read them for twenty minutes.
