Chapter 4: Taliaferro Lending

By the sixth day I had thirty-one thousand dollars, and the app wouldn't let me touch it.

A pop-up said my account was under review for unusual activity.

Dex read it over my shoulder in the motel room we'd moved into on Baum Boulevard and said a word I won't repeat.

"They think you're cheating," he said.

"I'm not cheating."

"You're not exactly not cheating."

He was right, and I knew it.

Every night I lay on the second bed with the TV off and looked at tomorrow's numbers on my phone.

Every morning I put a little more on the gold ones and left the red ones alone.

I never took the whole pile.

I had a rule already, one I didn't remember making: never more than the number said was safe.

Now the app had frozen me out, and a number was still hanging over every stock in the world, and I couldn't spend it.

"I need somebody with a real desk," I said. "A firm. Somebody who can move money without a pop-up."

"Everyone with a real desk wants a suit."

"Then we buy a suit."

That was how I ended up on Penn Avenue on Wednesday afternoon, in a gray jacket from a thrift store that Dex had taken in at the shoulders with a safety pin.

The only window on the block that said CAPITAL was in the lobby of a narrow building with a brass plaque.

TALIAFERRO PRIVATE LENDING.

The receptionist looked at my jacket, then at my face, then at the burn mark on my hand.

"Do you have an appointment?"

"No," I said. "I have thirty-one thousand dollars and an unusual problem."

She almost laughed.

Then the inner door opened and a woman in a cream suit leaned in the frame with a tablet against her hip.
