Chapter 18: Eleven Minutes

Mason's POV

The harbor news van was parked at the end of the town dock at ten to seven.

It was a white van with a mast on the roof and a station logo in blue.

A woman in a rain jacket stood beside it holding a coffee.

A cameraman was checking the light on the water.

A dozen fishermen leaned on the pilings with their thermoses.

They all knew me.

They had known my father.

I walked down the planks in yesterday's shirt with my bandaged hands at my sides.

A few of them looked away.

The reporter saw me and put her coffee down.

She had written two lines about my sister three years ago, under the word *accident*.

I had called her last night over the boat's radio phone, and she had said, "Why now?"

"Because it's Monday," I had said.

"Mr. Reeve," she said now. "You're wanted for kidnapping."

"I know."

"I'm obliged to tell the sheriff you're standing here."

"Tell him after."

She looked at the cameraman.

He shrugged, and she nodded.

"We go live at seven," she said. "You have as long as I give you."

"That's all I need."

The red light came on.

A hundred yards behind her, the first gull screamed over the water.

"Good morning," she said into the lens. "I'm at the town dock with Mason Reeve, the salvage captain sought by police since Saturday."

She turned the microphone toward me.

"He asked to speak to the harbor directly."

I had written it on the back of a chart last night, and I did not take the paper out.

"My name is Mason Reeve," I said. "I did not kidnap Hallie Winslow Langford. She walked into the Langford wedding on her own feet, and she was telling the truth."

Behind me someone set a thermos down.
