Chapter 10: Yes, There Is a Relationship

Ezra let the phone ring out.

Then he picked it up, put it face down on the nightstand, and pulled me back against his chest.

"Text your mother," he said into my hair. "Tell her you slept at Dee's."

"Judd will check."

"Judd can check. I'll deal with Judd."

I typed with one thumb: Sorry, fell asleep at a friend's. Fine. Home later.

My mother sent back a row of hearts and a scolding.

I put the phone down and rolled over to look at him.

His eyes were open. He was looking at me as if I might disappear if he blinked.

"Does it hurt?" he asked quietly.

"A little. In a good way."

"And the cramp?"

"Gone." I smiled. "Is that the treatment, then? You did it?"

"One session." He traced my jaw with his thumb. "You'll need more."

"Doctor," I said, "I think I'll need a lot more."

He kissed me, and it went on until the sheets were on the floor.

We showered together afterward, because he said I needed to be rinsed off and I said he needed to be shown where.

He pressed me against the cold tile and went down on his knees in the steam.

I held onto the bar with both hands and lost my voice.

I walked onto the floor at ten past seven in yesterday's scrubs.

Dee looked at me over the rim of her coffee.

She looked at the scrubs. She looked at my wet hair.

"Don't say anything," I said.

"I'm not going to."

She took a slow sip.

"I just want it noted that the laundry room is on the second floor."

The hearing was at two.
