Chapter 17: Judd at the Door

Ezra was on call that night, so I was alone in my apartment with a mug of tea going cold.

I kept thinking about his hand on the back of my neck in the stairwell.

There was a faint bruise on my wrist where he had held it.

I pressed my thumb into it on purpose, just to feel it again.

The buzzer went at nine.

I thought it was the delivery I had forgotten.

It was my brother.

He stood at the bottom of the stairs in his station jacket.

His hands were in his pockets and his eyes were on his boots.

"Bry. Can I come up?"

I looked at him for a long time over the railing.

"Your wife sent you," I said.

"She told me to come four days ago. I'm only here now because she said she'd drive me herself."

I let him in.

He did not sit.

He stood in the middle of my small living room and turned his cap over in his hands.

"I owe you the whole thing," he said.

"I'm going to say it without stopping. Then you can throw me out."

"Start."

"I went to get the coats at the end of the night."

His voice was rough.

"The coat room door was shut, and I heard you laughing."

He looked at his boots.

"I opened it, and he had you against the wall with his hands in your hair."

"I kissed him first, Judd."

"I know that now. I didn't see it then. I saw my best friend with my drunk little sister."

He swallowed.

"I dragged him out into the hall and I made him say it."

"Say what?"

"That he'd never touch you again. He was shaking so hard he could barely talk."
