The chair did not make us wait.
"The rule is the rule," she said. "An attending may not supervise a nurse he is involved with. One of you leaves the unit."
Ezra stood up before she finished.
"I'll go. Put me in the outpatient suite."
"Sit down, Ezra," I said.
He looked at me.
"Brynn."
"Sit down."
He sat, slowly.
I stood, and every head at the table turned.
"Madam chair, I'd like to choose."
"It's the board's decision, Nurse Caldwell."
"Then the board can hear what I'd choose, and decide whether it's acceptable."
She folded her hands.
"Go on."
"You're opening a pelvic pain clinic on the second floor in January."
Several people at the table looked at each other.
"I've read the proposal. It says it needs a nurse who has worked the women's floor for four years and knows what it is to hurt for months and not be believed."
"That is in the proposal," the chair said carefully.
"I'd like that job."
I felt Ezra go still beside me.
"I'd like it because I want it. I didn't pick it because a rule pushed me. I'll teach every nurse on the floor what I learned, and I'll sit across from every woman who thinks she's broken."
I took a breath.
"Dr. Finbarr stays on the floor. I move down the stairs. We don't report to each other. And Charge Nurse Faherty keeps me for a Saturday shift on the floor, so I never lose my people."
At the end of the table the thin lawyer wrote something down.
