Chapter 3: Ask Her What's in Her Bag

Ezra shuts Preston down in front of the staff, then sets the terms of her treatment: Room 3, tonight, bring nothing.

Ezra moved first.

"Chair," he said, very low. "Sit. Open that chart. Look bored."

I yanked my underwear on and got my scrubs straight.

I dropped into the visitor chair with a file open on my knee.

My hands were shaking, and I could still feel where he had been.

Ezra tugged his sleeves down and unlocked the door.

Preston stood in the hall in green surgical scrubs with his cap pushed back on his blond hair.

Dee was two steps behind him with a clipboard and a face that gave nothing away.

"Brynn," Preston said, and smiled at me. It came a little too fast. "There you are. I've been looking for you for ten minutes."

"She's in a consult," Ezra said.

"With the door locked?"

"With the door closed, Dr. Gaines. It's called privacy."

Preston looked past him. I felt his eyes go over my face and my hair and my flushed neck.

"Funny," he said. "Her scrubs look like she got dressed in a hurry."

Ezra didn't move from the doorway.

"If you need a nurse on this floor, you page the charge nurse. You don't hunt for one in my office."

Dee lifted her clipboard slightly. "He's right. You paged nobody."

"I'm not here for the floor." Preston leaned on the frame and looked at me. "I just want five minutes, Bryn. Alone."

"No," I said.

It came out steadier than I felt.

His smile thinned.

"Still hiding in rooms, I see. You did that the whole time we were together."

He turned toward Ezra, friendly and loud, so the whole hallway could hear.

"Ask her what she keeps in her bag, Doctor."

Dee went very still.

Two nurses at the desk stopped talking.

My face went hot all the way to my ears.

Ezra took one step forward, and Preston had to lean back from him.

"Dr. Gaines," he said.

He did not raise his voice.

"You are standing in my hallway discussing a nurse's belongings in front of her colleagues."

"I'm only saying..."

"I know what you're saying."

His voice stayed flat.

"If I hear it again, I will walk it to your chief of surgery myself. I'll bring Ms. Faherty as a witness."

Dee nodded once. "I'd like that."

Preston looked from one of us to the other.

Then he laughed, short and light.

"Wow. Okay. Don't get so protective." He pushed off the doorframe. "See you around, Brynn."

He walked away. At the end of the hall he glanced back, and the smile was gone.

Nobody spoke until the elevator doors closed.

Dee stepped into the office and looked at me, then at Ezra, then at the charts that had slid out of their stack.

"Brynn," she said gently. "Your scrub top is inside out."

I looked down. The seam was showing along my ribs.

"I'll take that headache off your hands," Dee said. "Drink some water. You've got eight minutes before I need you back on the floor."

She left. She closed the door behind her without a sound.

I put my face in my hands.

"She knows."

"She knows nothing," Ezra said. "She knows you were upset and that your ex is a problem."

"He knows about the toy. He found it months ago. He laughed at me."

"I heard."

I looked up.

Ezra was standing very close to the desk.

All the doctor had gone out of his face, and what was left looked tired and hard.

"He laughed?" he asked.

"He said I was a freak who needed to buy my own company."

He was silent for a moment. A muscle moved in his jaw.

"Brynn," he said at last, "listen to me. There's nothing wrong with you."

He drew a slow breath.

"Your pelvic floor has been clamping for six months. It will keep doing it until someone teaches it to stop."

"And that's you?"

"If you want me to."

My pulse hammered. "What would that be? Treatment?"

"Sessions. After hours, here, with the door locked."

He said it plainly.

"I'll walk you through it. You'll tell me exactly what you feel, and you'll do what I say."

I nodded. I couldn't have said no for any money.

"There are rules."

"Okay."

"One." He raised a finger. "No more toy. Not in a bathroom, not at home, not on shift."

His eyes stayed on mine.

"When the cramp starts, you come find me."

"And if you're in surgery?"

"Then you text me, and you breathe, and you wait. It won't kill you to wait."

"Two?"

"Two. You don't touch me. I set the pace." His eyes held mine. "That isn't about you. It's about me."

Something low in my belly turned over.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you'll do as I say, and you'll thank me later."

He lowered his hand.

"Three. Nobody knows. Not Dee, not your friends, not your family."

I noticed that he didn't say a name. He never did.

"Why not?"

"Because I'm your attending, Brynn. There's a hospital rule about this. And because there's someone who would not forgive me."

"Who?"

He didn't answer. He took a pen from his pocket and wrote on the back of a sticky note, and folded it small.

He put it in my palm and closed my fingers over it.

"Tonight," he said. "Room 3. Bring nothing."

I walked out into the hall with my scrub top still inside out and the note burning in my hand.

I did not read it until I was in the bathroom.

It said: Nine o'clock. Wear no underwear.
