I kept the velvet box in the crooked bookcase, on the shelf I had built the year I started the company.
I took it down with both hands.
The room had gone quiet again.
"Mom, you said you'd know," Junie whispered. "You said it would feel like something."
"I know I said that."
"Does it?"
I looked at her, at the gap in her teeth and the gravy on her cuff.
I had always pictured the day differently.
I had imagined a stage, a ribbon, a room of strangers standing up.
I had imagined that I'd be told when it was.
"I thought it would be loud," I said.
"Is it?"
"No."
I looked down the long white table.
My father sat at the head with his hands folded, no longer waiting outside any principal's office.
My sister sat with her chin in her hand and gravy on her sleeve.
She was learning to be ordinary, and finding out she could bear it.
