Chapter 30: Vacated
On Friday at nine, the state's attorney stood up in Courtroom 402.
She spoke the words I had waited twenty-six months to hear.
"The people so move, Your Honor."
I sat at the table where I had been sentenced.
Hester sat behind me with her cane across her knees.
Garret sat beside her, and he had not been told to sit up straight.
The gallery was full again.
The mothers from Lakeview Day School filled the third row, and a good many of the green vests stood at the back.
At the second table, in an orange jumpsuit with a white tag on the chest, sat Desmond.
They had cut his hair on Wednesday.
Without the gel it stuck up in the back.
His new lawyer, a young man with a very careful face, kept his chair angled slightly away.
"The state moves to vacate the conviction of Philippa Corrigan," said the state's attorney.
"The grounds are new evidence and the sworn recantation of the principal witness."
"Mrs. Kenilworth's plea was entered yesterday?" said the judge.
