Chapter 32: Home
The Lake Forest house had thirty-one rooms, and on Monday night we used four of them.
The front hall smelled of cold stone and fresh paint, and somewhere upstairs a radiator was knocking.
Posy stood on the black-and-white tiles in her yellow coat and looked up at the ceiling.
"Is this where you lived?"
"Where I grew up."
"It's very big."
"It was very empty without you in it."
She thought about that, and slid her hand into mine.
By the staircase stood a green bicycle with a red bow on the handlebars and training wheels.
"Whose is that?" said Posy, very quietly.
"I have no idea," I said, and looked at Garret.
He was examining the chandelier.
"Trucks carry everything," he said, to the chandelier. "I may have lost a bicycle on the way."
Posy walked around it twice with her hands behind her back, as a general would.
"It's number five," she said.
"It's number five."
"Can I ride it?"
"Tomorrow, when it's light. You have a cake to eat first."
Hester had baked it on Sunday in a borrowed oven.
She carried it up the drive in a tin.
It was a plain yellow cake.
She had covered it entirely in sprinkles, every color.
"Sprinkles," whispered Posy.
"It's number one," said Hester. "I counted on my fingers."
We ate it in the kitchen, at a long table with five chairs, with the radiator knocking.
Posy ate three slices and fell asleep with her cheek on her arm between the third and the fourth.
I carried her up the stairs.
She weighed almost nothing and everything.
The master bedroom had a bed the size of a small country.
The Chairman's wife had made it up with white sheets and the faded star quilt from Posy's old bed.
