On Saturday morning he worked out what the Grand Market would cost him.
The ginseng berries from the pebble row lay drying on a flat stone by the stove, red and soft.
Inside them were sixty-two seeds, dry enough to sprout.
The seeds were the easy sum, and the ash was the hard one.
A Prime root needed a scoop of ash worked into its bed, and the stone trough by the door filled a scoop a night.
He meant to spend a dozen scoops and not one more.
Anything past a dozen would come up Fine.
Fine woke a skill whole, but slowly, over minutes, and it kept fourteen days instead of forever.
Bom sat on the warm floor with her back against the stove and listened to him work it out aloud.
"Then the dozen are Prime," she said. "Yook has to buy them, so they should be the best thing he's ever bought."
He planted nothing that day.
Instead he set out the week's three lots, because the stone gave him three and he meant to use them.
A radish went on the stone with a term for a sack of rice at the lot door.
A basket of tomatoes went with a term for salt and a can of cooking oil.
The third was the root Bom had tried to carry out for the other twin.
Its term asked for it to be eaten on the Hanbat bench.
The rice was gone, and Grandma's flour was down to a third.
If the radish sold tonight, they would eat rice on Sunday.
