Chapter 28: Gray Rain
They climbed all night, through seventeen floors that other people had already cleared.
On floor 11 the stair came out into a white field so cold the knitter's needles frosted over.
Gyu-ho walked across it in his shirt with the hood over his face and thought of Hanbat crossing it in October on Grandma's peppers.
On floor 14 swords stood up out of blue moss, and nobody touched one.
On floor 17 the path ran beside a gray thicket that leaned toward them as they passed.
Bom walked that stretch with her lance lit and her eyes on the stair, and he walked between her and the branches.
On floor 23 the six Cheongju raiders closed around the five and kept them in the middle until the next stair.
Floor 28 began at the top of that stair, in the rain.
It was a flat gray plain under a low gray sky, and the rain came down out of it in long slow sheets.
The far end was too far away to see.
Somewhere out there, forty kilometers off, a thing stood in front of a stone gate, and whoever touched the gate cleared the floor.
Nobody had touched it in two years, and Namgung had stopped at 27.
Bom stopped on the last step with the six Cheongju raiders behind her.

The permit said an F-rank party, and she was A.
She swung the sack of tomatoes off her shoulder and into Gyu-ho's arms.
"Feed them every hour," Bom said. "Even if they say they're fine."
"I know," said Gyu-ho.
