Chapter 32: The Road of Doors
Grandma was out of the kitchen door before either of them could stop her, in her rubber boots, with her handbag on her arm.
"Grandma," Gyu-ho said. "Wait."
"I've waited four years," said Grandma.
They went down through the pepper field in the dusk, the three of them, with the dry stalks crackling under their boots.
The frame stood in the dirt at the bottom of the field.
It was the same gray stone as everything in the Tower, cold to the touch, with no door in it.
Through it he could see the rest of the field, and the lane, and the widow's lights coming on next door.
He put his hand into the empty space inside the frame.
His fingers went into gray light.
He knew it.
"It's mine," he said. "It goes to my floor."
Grandma took hold of his arm with one hand and Bom's with the other.
"Then take me to see it," Grandma said.
They stepped through together.
The light on the other side was going down to dusk.
The grass ran away in every direction to the far gray wall.
He thought Status before he could stop himself, and the window came up in the air.
