Chapter 15: The Fairness Mirror
The Fairness Mirror stood on a bronze stand in the middle of the Hall of Unlit Lamps.
It was taller than a man, and nobody wanted to stand near it.
It was a disc of polished metal with nine names cut around the rim.
The arbiter of Heron Lake stood beside it and read out the rules.
Shi Wen stood behind the black chair with the cup at his hip and counted the sect heads.
Nine of them, in nine colors, down both sides of the Hall.
The only one he knew by sight was the grey-robed woman from the banquet who had turned her chair away from the Young Sword.
"Rule one," said the arbiter. "A fighter uses his own qi and none other."
"Rule two. The Mirror sees every fighter's qi in his own color. Azure Peak shows gold. The Moonless Valley shows black and silver."
"Any qi from outside a fighter shows as a third color. A fighter who shows a third color forfeits the match."
Shi Wen glanced at the Young Sword.
Qi Yunchuan stood at the foot of the Peak Master's chair, smiling pleasantly at the ceiling.
"Rule three. The host valley names its champion for the final."
The arbiter lifted her eyes.
"The older clause also stands."
